Artist Biography

The Weavers were an American folk music quartet formed in 1947 by Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Fred Hellerman, and Ronnie Gilbert. They were known for their intricate harmonies and socially conscious repertoire, which often included traditional folk songs as well as new compositions addressing political and social issues. The group rose to fame in the late 1940s and 1950s, becoming one of the most popular and influential folk music acts of the time. They scored hits with songs like "Goodnight, Irene" and "On Top of Old Smoky," which helped bring folk music to a wider audience. The Weavers' career was marked by both commercial success and controversy due to their left-leaning political beliefs, which led to them being blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Despite this, they continued to perform and record music, inspiring generations of folk musicians and activists. The Weavers disbanded in 1964 but reunited several times over the years for special performances. Their impact on folk music and social activism continues to be felt to this day.
