Artist Biography
Virgil Fox (1912-1980) was an American organist known for his innovative and flamboyant style of playing that helped popularize classical organ music in the United States. Born in Princeton, Illinois, Fox showed musical talent from a young age and began studying the organ at the age of 10. He went on to study at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and later at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Fox's career took off in the 1940s when he started performing recitals across the country, showcasing his virtuosic technique and showmanship. He became particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, earning him a reputation as one of the greatest Bach organists of his time. In addition to his live performances, Fox also recorded numerous albums, including the popular "Heavy Organ" series, which featured rock-inspired arrangements of classical pieces. Throughout his career, Virgil Fox pushed the boundaries of traditional organ playing, bringing a new level of excitement and accessibility to the instrument.
