Artist Biography
Steven Jesse Bernstein was an American underground poet and performance artist known for his intense, raw, and deeply personal spoken word performances. Born in Los Angeles in 1950, Bernstein struggled with mental health issues throughout his life, which heavily influenced his work. He moved to Seattle in the 1970s and became a prominent figure in the city's burgeoning alternative music and poetry scene. Bernstein released his debut album, "Prison," in 1992, which showcased his unique and confrontational style of spoken word. His work often delved into themes of addiction, mental illness, and societal alienation, earning him a reputation for his dark and visceral poetry. Tragically, Bernstein struggled with drug addiction and depression for much of his life, and in 1991, he took his own life at the age of 40. Despite his short career, Bernstein left a lasting impact on the underground music and poetry scenes, with his work continuing to be celebrated for its honesty, intensity, and emotional depth.
