Artist Biography
The Weavers were an American folk music quartet formed in 1947. The group consisted of Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Fred Hellerman, and Ronnie Gilbert. They are credited with popularizing folk music in the United States during the 1950s and influencing the folk revival of that decade. The Weavers are best known for their hits such as "Goodnight, Irene" and "On Top of Old Smoky." Their music often carried social and political messages, and they were blacklisted during the McCarthy era due to their left-wing political beliefs. Despite facing censorship and backlash, The Weavers continued to perform and record music that resonated with audiences. Their harmonious vocal arrangements and blend of traditional folk songs with newer material set them apart in the music scene of their time. The Weavers disbanded in 1964 but left a lasting impact on the folk music genre. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001.
