Van Halen was an American rock band formed in Pasadena, California, in 1972. The group consisted of guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen, bassist Michael Anthony, and frontman David Lee Roth. They are widely regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the late 20th century, known for their energetic performances and innovative sound. The band's self-titled debut album, released in 1978, showcased Eddie's groundbreaking guitar techniques, particularly his use of two-handed tapping, which would influence countless guitarists. Van Halen achieved massive commercial success with albums like "1984," which featured hits such as "Jump" and "Panama." Their blend of hard rock, pop sensibilities, and virtuosic musicianship helped define the sound of the 1980s. After Roth's departure in 1985, Sammy Hagar joined as lead vocalist, resulting in a new era for the band with hits like "Why Can't This Be Love" and "Dreams." Van Halen continued to evolve through various lineup changes, including the return of Roth in the 2000s. Eddie Van Halen's death in October 2020 marked the end of an era for the band, but their legacy endures in rock music history.
