Artist Biography
Dinah Washington, born Ruth Lee Jones on August 29, 1924, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was an American singer and pianist who achieved great success in the genres of jazz, blues, and R&B. Known for her powerful voice and emotional delivery, Washington recorded numerous hits during the 1940s and 1950s, including "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" and "Unforgettable." Washington began her career performing in church choirs before moving on to singing in nightclubs. She signed with Mercury Records in the early 1950s and quickly rose to fame with her distinctive vocal style. Throughout her career, Washington collaborated with many other notable artists, including Quincy Jones and Brook Benton. Sadly, Dinah Washington's life was cut short when she passed away on December 14, 1963, at the age of 39. Despite her untimely death, her music continues to inspire and influence generations of musicians and fans worldwide.
