Artist Biography
Billie Holiday, born Eleanora Fagan, was an American jazz and blues singer who became one of the most influential and iconic vocalists of the 20th century. Born on April 7, 1915, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Holiday had a difficult childhood and started singing in nightclubs as a teenager. Her unique voice, characterized by its emotive depth and distinctive phrasing, quickly gained her recognition in the music industry. Holiday's career took off in the 1930s and 1940s with hits like "Strange Fruit," "God Bless the Child," and "Lady Sings the Blues." Despite facing personal struggles and discrimination as a Black woman in a segregated society, she continued to captivate audiences with her soulful performances. Holiday's music often reflected her own experiences and emotions, earning her a reputation as a masterful storyteller through song. Tragically, Billie Holiday passed away on July 17, 1959, but her legacy lives on through her timeless recordings and enduring influence on jazz and popular music.
