Artist Biography

Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) was an Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher, and cleric. He is recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, particularly famous for his instrumental concertos, especially for violin. Vivaldi was born in Venice, Italy, and trained for the priesthood, being ordained in 1703. Known as "The Red Priest" due to his red hair and clerical background, Vivaldi spent much of his career working at the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children where he taught music and composed most of his major works. Vivaldi's most famous work is "The Four Seasons," a set of four violin concertos that depict scenes and moods of each season. His music is characterized by its rhythmic drive, virtuosic violin writing, and innovative use of harmony. Despite falling into obscurity after his death, Vivaldi's music experienced a revival in the 20th century and is now celebrated worldwide for its beauty and technical brilliance.
