Arthur Lyman was an American jazz vibraphonist and marimba player, known for popularizing exotica music in the 1950s and 1960s. Born on February 2, 1932, in Kauai, Hawaii, Lyman's music was heavily influenced by the sounds of the South Pacific, incorporating elements of Hawaiian, Asian, and Latin music into his performances. Lyman gained widespread recognition as a member of Martin Denny's band before launching his successful solo career. He released a series of albums that showcased his unique blend of jazz, exotica, and traditional Hawaiian music, including the popular "Taboo" and "Yellow Bird." With his smooth vibraphone melodies and tropical rhythms, Lyman's music became synonymous with the laid-back, escapist vibe of the exotica genre. His recordings often featured lush orchestration and exotic percussion instruments, creating a dreamy and immersive listening experience.
