Artist Biography
Robbie Robertson is a Canadian musician, songwriter, and guitarist, best known for his work as the lead guitarist and primary songwriter for the legendary rock group The Band. Born on July 5, 1943, in Toronto, Ontario, Robertson's career in music began in the late 1950s when he started playing in various bands. In the early 1960s, he joined Ronnie Hawkins' backing band, The Hawks, where he met future members of The Band. Robertson's songwriting skills and distinctive guitar playing were integral to The Band's sound and success. The group's music blended elements of rock, folk, country, and blues, creating a unique and influential sound that resonated with audiences around the world. Some of their most famous songs include "The Weight," "Up on Cripple Creek," and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." After The Band's breakup in 1976, Robertson pursued a successful solo career and also worked as a producer and film composer. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Band in 1994.
