This Mortal Coil was a musical project formed in the early 1980s by Ivo Watts-Russell, the founder of the record label 4AD. The project was essentially a collaboration of various musicians and artists associated with the label, creating ethereal and ambient music that blended elements of dream pop, post-punk, and gothic rock. Their sound was characterized by haunting vocals, lush instrumentation, and a moody atmospheric quality. The lineup of This Mortal Coil changed with each album, with notable contributors including members of Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, and other 4AD artists. Their three studio albums, "It'll End in Tears" (1984), "Filigree & Shadow" (1986), and "Blood" (1991), received critical acclaim and developed a cult following. This Mortal Coil's music is often described as atmospheric, introspective, and emotionally powerful, with a focus on reinterpretations of existing songs as well as original compositions. Despite disbanding in the early 1990s, their influence on alternative and indie music continues to be felt today.
