About Carl Orff
Carl Orff (1895-1982) was a German composer and music educator, best known for his innovative approach to music education and his dramatic cantata "Carmina Burana." Born in Munich, Orff studied at the University of Munich and the Munich Academy of Music. He initially composed in a variety of styles, but his interest in early music and folk traditions led him to develop a unique musical language characterized by rhythmic vitality and simplicity. In 1937, Orff's "Carmina Burana," based on medieval poems, gained international acclaim for its powerful choral writing and striking orchestration. This work remains one of the most performed pieces in the choral repertoire. Beyond composition, Orff was a pioneer in music education, creating the Orff Schulwerk approach, which emphasizes active music-making through singing, movement, and the use of instruments, particularly percussion. His influence extended well beyond his lifetime, impacting music education practices worldwide. Orff's legacy is marked by his ability to blend art and pedagogy, making music accessible and enjoyable for all ages. He passed away in 1982, leaving behind a rich body of work and a lasting educational philosophy.
