Artist Biography
Willi Boskovsky was an Austrian violinist and conductor, best known for his association with the Wiener Philharmoniker. Born on June 16, 1909, in Vienna, Boskovsky began his musical career at a young age, studying violin at the Vienna Academy of Music. He joined the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in 1936 and became concertmaster of the Wiener Philharmoniker in 1939. Boskovsky's talent as a violinist and conductor was widely recognized, and he became a leading figure in the Viennese classical music scene. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the music of Johann Strauss II and the Viennese waltz tradition. Boskovsky conducted the famous New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic multiple times, showcasing his deep understanding and passion for this repertoire. Throughout his career, Boskovsky recorded extensively with the Wiener Philharmoniker, leaving behind a rich legacy of recordings that continue to be cherished by classical music enthusiasts worldwide. He passed away on April 21, 1991, but his contributions to the world of classical music live on through his recordings and performances.
