Artist Biography
Gene Autry, born Orvon Grover Autry on September 29, 1907, in Tioga, Texas, was an American singer, actor, and rodeo performer who became one of the most iconic figures in country music and Western entertainment. Often referred to as "The Singing Cowboy," Autry gained fame for his smooth voice and charming on-screen persona in over 90 films and his popular radio show "Gene Autry's Melody Ranch." Autry's career in music was equally successful, with hits such as "Back in the Saddle Again," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," and "South of the Border." He was the first artist to sell more than a million copies of a Christmas single with "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." In addition to his musical and acting talents, Autry was also a successful businessman, owning the Los Angeles Angels Major League Baseball team and various radio and television stations. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, solidifying his legacy as a pioneer in country and Western music.
