Artist Biography

Compay Segundo, born as Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz in Cuba in 1907, was a legendary musician known for his influential role in popularizing traditional Cuban music around the world. He was a talented singer, songwriter, and guitarist, but he was best known for his distinctive style of playing the Cuban tres, a traditional guitar-like instrument. Segundo gained international fame as a member of the Buena Vista Social Club, a group of veteran Cuban musicians who were brought together by musician Ry Cooder to record an album in 1996. The album was a huge success, earning a Grammy Award and sparking a revival of interest in traditional Cuban music. Throughout his long and prolific career, Compay Segundo released numerous solo albums and collaborated with many other renowned artists. His music was characterized by its infectious rhythms, soulful melodies, and heartfelt lyrics that often celebrated Cuban culture and traditions. Compay Segundo passed away in 2003 at the age of 95, but his music continues to inspire and delight audiences around the world. He is remembered as a true icon of Cuban music and a beloved figure in the global music community.
